3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Empowering Long Beach Youth Through Sports, Service & Scholarship
On Saturday, August 9, the gym at Cabrillo High School will fill up with sneakers squeaking, music bumping, and a whole lot of love for Long Beach’s youth. It’s the return of Hoops & Heroes, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament that’s less about the scoreboard and more about showing up—for our kids, for our community, and for the kind of future we all want to see here.
Organized by California Families in Focus (CFF), this isn’t your typical charity event. It’s a day where the community participates; from students, athletes, cops, firefighters, and mentors—get on the court together and connect to create a space for mentorship, healing, and genuine community-building.
Here’s the vibe:
- 3-on-3 tournament featuring local youth & adult teams
- Basketball clinic run by the CSULB Women’s team + LBPD
- Live DJ, food vendors, performances, silent auction
- Scholarships and youth empowerment awards honoring real kids doing the work
And at the center of it all? The legacy of Kimberly Maddox, a powerhouse in our community who mentored countless young people and poured love into every corner of Long Beach she touched. The tournament raises money for the Kimberly Maddox Youth Scholarship, supporting students who lead with heart and serve their community—especially those dreaming of careers in law and public service.
You don’t have to play ball to be part of this. CFF is calling on local businesses, nonprofits, churches, artists, and anyone who cares about Long Beach to form teams, show up, and support. There’ll even be prizes for the funniest and most creative team names—because of course there are. That’s Long Beach.
This is about unity. About saying we see you, we believe in you, and we’ve got your back.
So if you’ve ever wanted to be part of something real—something that uplifts, connects, and gives back—this is it. Pull up.
