Winter Recreation Classes Registration Open This Week

The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine will open registration for their winter recreation classes on Nov. 6, 2023. The classes, spanning from December 2023 to February 2024, offer a wide range of activities including art, music, fitness, and sports for all ages from preschoolers to adults. The classes aim to provide opportunities for exercise, social interaction, learning, and relaxation. Residents can access the complete list of classes through the latest issue of Recreation Connection, available online and at various Long Beach locations. Some featured classes include cooking, dance, sports, and educational programs tailored to different age groups. Health Department Awarded Grant for Vaccine Equity Project

The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has received a $150,000 grant from the National Association of County and City Officials for the Partnering for Vaccine Equity (PAVE) project. This initiative aims to increase vaccination rates and address disparities in influenza and COVID-19 coverage among racial and ethnic minority adults. The Health Department will gather data through focus groups and an online Community Assessment Questionnaire available in multiple languages. Over the next year, the Health Department plans to collaborate with Community-Based Organizations to develop strategies for improving vaccine uptake, including enhancing immunization services and communication efforts. Annual California Native Plant Sale at El Dorado Nature Center

The City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is hosting its annual California Native Plant Sale from November 7 to November 21, 2023, at El Dorado Nature Center. The sale offers a variety of beautiful and wildlife-friendly native plants to enhance gardens and provide habitat for wildlife. Plants can be purchased on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The process involves filling out an order form, making payment, and picking up the plants. Availability is limited, and pre-orders are not accepted. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Friends of El Dorado Nature Center, supporting their efforts in environmental education and conservation. Long Beach Airport Launches Yearlong Centennial Celebration

Long Beach Airport (LGB) is marking its 100th anniversary with a yearlong celebration, culminating on November 26, 2023. As a vital part of Long Beach’s history, LGB has played a crucial role in connecting the community to the world, fostering economic growth, and inspiring aviation enthusiasts. The centennial celebration includes a series of events, such as the Festival of Flight and a four-part short film series highlighting the airport’s history. The festivities also feature public art installations, historic reports, a marketing campaign, and the reopening of the Historic Terminal. Long Beach Election Day Schedule and Closures

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, the city of Long Beach will observe Election Day, affecting various facilities and services. Some locations will remain open during regular business hours, including parks, fire stations, and certain city offices. However, several services will be closed, such as libraries, City Hall offices, and select administrative offices. Street sweeping and parking enforcement will also be impacted. Residents are encouraged to utilize online resources for building permits and bill payments. Trash and recycling collection will proceed as scheduled, but the Towing Operations and Vehicle Storage Facility will be closed.
